Connecting your RBC accounts to Boreal
Many people use RBC for the accounts that touch everyday life most often: the chequing account where income lands, the savings account that holds a buffer, and the credit card that picks up regular spending. When you connect your RBC accounts to Boreal through Plaid, those pieces can appear in one view instead of staying split across separate screens and statements.
The connection is read-only. Boreal can review balances and transactions so it can summarize what changed, but it cannot move money, pay bills, transfer funds, or edit anything inside your RBC relationship. Your online banking credentials are handled by Plaid, not by Boreal, so your password never passes through Boreal's servers.
What Boreal shows you
Once your RBC data is connected, Boreal starts doing the work that usually gets pushed onto you in a budgeting app. Transactions are categorized automatically, recurring activity is easier to spot, and the dashboard starts showing the trends that matter without asking you to build a budget first or sort purchases one by one.
That matters most when several RBC accounts work together. A paycheque landing in chequing, a card balance rising mid-month, and a transfer into savings all mean more when they are seen together. Boreal focuses on that combined picture so you can understand where your money went, what changed from the prior month, and where cash flow appears to be heading next.
Typically supported account types
- Chequing accounts that handle income, bill payments, and day-to-day spending.
- Savings accounts used for short-term goals, emergency cash, or general reserves.
- Credit cards that help show category-level spending and recurring charges.
- Lines of credit or similar borrowing accounts when they are available through Plaid.
- Investment accounts may appear for some customers when Plaid supports that account connection.
How syncing and reconnection work
Once linked, supported RBC accounts continue refreshing as new balances and transactions become available through Plaid. Boreal does not promise a fixed timing because refresh behaviour can vary by RBC product and by Plaid’s current access.
From time to time, RBC or Plaid may ask you to sign in again before imports continue. If Boreal prompts you to reconnect, completing that step restores the supported feed while keeping the connection read-only.
Security and privacy
Boreal uses read-only connections for RBC data. That means Boreal can observe the activity needed to explain your finances, but it cannot initiate payments, move money between accounts, or make changes to account settings.
Your credentials stay with Plaid during the connection flow, and Boreal does not receive or store your online banking password. Data that Boreal keeps to power your dashboard and insights is protected with AES-256 encryption, which matches the security promises already made elsewhere on the site.
You stay in control after the initial connection as well. You can disconnect linked accounts, stop syncing, or delete your Boreal data if you decide the product is not for you.
Connecting other Canadian institutions at the same time
Boreal is not limited to one institution. If you want to connect RBC and TD accounts in one app, TD can sit beside your RBC accounts, and Tangerine can be connected at the same time so everyday banking and secondary cash accounts stay in one view.
